Additional online programs from Project 5-100 Universities have been listed on Coursera, the world’s largest online learning platform. Today, more than 70 million people build their skills with Coursera courses submitted by 225 top universities and leading companies.
In December 2020, the Novosibirsk State University (NSU) launched two more online courses on Coursera and increased the number of its educational programs to 24. The “Basics of Thermodynamics” training module is dedicated to the basics of thermodynamics and is popular with engineering, technical and science. It provides a basic understanding of how thermal processes occur in nature and how power plants work, and gives you the opportunity to solve problems related to thermal phenomena.
“The future specialist who wants to combine his work with physical phenomena will find this thermodynamics course useful for himself. With the aim of appealing to a wide range of listeners, we only included the most important things in the course and removed all unnecessary things related to special topics, ”remarked the main lecturer of the course Artur Pogosov, head of the NSU General Physics department.
The training program “Seismic Tomography: Looking into the Earth”, developed by specialists from NSU and USPTU, is aimed at specialists from the fields of geophysics, mathematics, geochemistry, geology, petrology, engineering and science interested in the earth.
“With this course I want to break the stereotype that tomography is very difficult and that only close specialists with in-depth geophysical and mathematical training can do it,” said Ivan Kulakov, head of the seismic imaging laboratory at NSU Earth.
MISIS has launched its first English-language online course on Coursera. The educational module “Intelligent Materials: Microscale and Macroscale Approaches” was developed with the support of the Peter the Great Polytechnic University of St. Petersburg and is of interest to anyone interested in modern materials science and the development of new technologies in biomedicine. Students are introduced to the intricacies of production and learn about the trends in the use of smart materials.
The first online course at Coursera was also launched by Kazan Federal University. The free program “Stayin ‘Alive! First aid in the making ”teaches how to give first aid. Classes are held by employees of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Simulation Medicine of the Kazan Federal University.
“The course includes both theoretical material and practical skills videos captured using the modern equipment at the Center for Simulation and Imitation Training,” said program co-author, Associate Professor Julia Valeeva.
A new online course for future physicists has been put together by scientists from MEPhI and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The NICA Mega-Science Project Accelerators program, launched on the Coursera platform, consists of eight modules and talks about the latest advances in high-energy physics as well as scientific megascience projects such as the NICA. One of the most important scientific tasks of the NICA project is the investigation of a special state of matter (quark-gluon-plasma), in which the universe was in the first moments after the Big Bang.
The active work of the universities in Project 5-100 to disseminate scientific knowledge is helping to increase student demand for online courses. According to the 2020 results compiled by the Coursera educational platform, the Higher School of Economics’ Fundamentals of Python Programming program was included in the top 5 most popular courses among users from Russia.
The training program published on Coursera by the TSU (career planning: résumé / curriculum vitae, cover letter, interview) took first place in Class Central’s international rating among 220 best courses in the world for career development and second among 650 courses for personality development.
The successful implementation of online courses using the most popular international educational platforms allows the universities of Project 5-100 to successfully promote the export of education and increases the popularity of Russian higher education among those interested in new knowledge and self-improvement are science, inventions and current research areas.
