The Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2020 includes nearly 1,400 universities in 92 countries and is considered the largest and most diverse university ranking of all time.

The table is based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance in terms of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international perspectives.

This year’s ranking is the only university ranking independently verified by PricewaterhouseCoopers, a professional services company, and trusted by students, teachers, governments and industry experts around the world. It provides excellent insight into the changing balance of power in global higher education.

For the fourth year in a row, the University of Oxford tops the rankings, while the University of Cambridge falls in third place. The California Institute of Technology climbs three places to second, while Stanford, Yale, Harvard and Imperial College London are all in the top ten.

Mainland China now boasts the two best universities in Asia. The universities of Tsinghua and Beijing take 23rd and 24th place respectively. The country’s universities have continued to expand their influence and presence on the world stage.

The US is once again very well represented in the global elite, while Canada’s top universities are on the rise.

In Europe, Italy’s top institutions are all making progress among the top 200 of the elite, and the German representation remains strong. However, the UK is facing declines.

Elsewhere, Iran has eleven other universities to represent up to 40 institutions, while Latin America struggles in a highly competitive global market – although Brazil adds several more institutions to the list.

This year several new regions join the ranking, as institutions are represented for the first time in Brunei, Cuba, Malta, Montenegro, Puerto Rico and Vietnam. Bangladesh also returns to the table.
